Work begins at South Valley Rail Runner Station

Construction crews get another commuter rail station ready for service

(1-9-07) Albuquerque – Crews are now grading an area and moving dirt at what will soon be the new Rail Runner commuter train station at Rio Bravo in Albuquerque’s south valley.

“This is a great advancement for the residents of the South Valley “, says Bernalillo County Commissioner Teresa Cordova, District 2. “The people of this area have been very supportive of the Rail Runner, and now they’re able to drive by the area and see work being done on the project. This is going to bring a much-needed affordable and economical transportation alternative to the valley”, adds Commissioner Cordova.

The new station will be located on Rio Bravo just east of 2nd Street. It will serve nearby residents as well as become the key rail link to those traveling in and out of the International Sunport. The station will offer free parking to train passengers. It is also the Rail Runner station that will serve the future development of Mesa del Sol, the planned community south of the airport.

“This is a very critical station – not just in terms of the Phase One Rail Runner corridor, but the entire Santa Fe to Belen project because of its ability to provide a connection to the airport”, says Lawrence Rael, Executive Director for the Mid-Region Council of Governments. “This will facilitate travelers coming to New Mexico, as well as provide efficient transportation to those who work at one of our state’s biggest employment centers – the International Sunport.”

Last month, the Village of Los Lunas was added to the Rail Runner route, with the City of Belen set to get service within the next few weeks. The south valley Rail Runner station is expected to be completed by April of this year.
