Record crowds ride train for Labor Day
Weekend
More than 26,000 ride the New Mexico Rail Runner
Express over the holiday weekend!
(Santa
Fe,
NM – September
8,
2009)-
A whopping 26,483
people boarded the New Mexico Rail Runner Express this past Labor
Day Holiday weekend. Many used the service to get to the New Mexico
Wine Festival in the Town of Bernalillo, and the City of Santa
Fe’s400th Celebration.
“We knew we’d see a lot of
people use the train this past holiday weekend, but we had no idea
it would be that many!” said Lawrence Rael, Executive Director of
the Mid-Region Council of Governments. “We had more than 26-thousand
people ride the train this past Labor Day weekend – which is
phenomenal!”
In addition to this past
Labor Day Weekend, the New Mexico Rail Runner Express will also be
available to help people get to the New Mexico State Fair. The train
and the fair are partnering to offer a “Buddy Plan”, that allows
two-for-one admission to the fair when two people ride the train.
“We are very proud to see
New Mexicans embrace this great transportation service, says NM
Department of Transportation Secretary Gary L.J. Girón. “Not only is
the New Mexico Rail Runner Express an economically efficient way to
avoid driving and parking costs when visiting events, but it is also
provides a safe alternative to driving on congested roadways”.
The Town of Bernalillo,
which hosts the NM Wine Festival, purchased two extra trains to
accommodate those wanting to use the service to get to the popular
event this past weekend. And the New Mexico Rail Runner Express
extended the hours of its late trains during the eventful weekend so
that passengers could still catch a late train home at the end of
the evening. This Thursday September 10th, the last train leaving
Santa Fe will once again be moved from 9:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. so
that those using the train to get to the traditional Zozobra event
in Santa Fe will still be able to catch a ride home on the New
Mexico Rail Runner Express.
