Rail Runner Teams Up with Storehouse for Summer Food Drive
(Albuquerque,
NM – July
17, 2009)- The New Mexico
Rail Runner Express is partnering with Central New Mexico Community
College (CNM) service learning students, and the Storehouse of
Greater Albuquerque for a summer food drive. This food drive is a
CNM Service Learning Activity, organized and conducted by Service
Learning students to benefit the Storehouse.
The Storehouse is the largest food pantry in
New Mexico, and ranks in the top food pantries in volume
in the United States. In 2006, the
Storehouse provided more than two-million meals, and has maintained
that pace through 2008. According to statistics kept by the
Storehouse, New Mexico ranks number one in the nation in
hunger, and has the highest rate of child poverty in the country.
“We generally think of these types of activities
during the holiday season,” says Lawrence Rael, Executive Director of the Mid-Region
Council of Governments. “But there are thousands of New Mexicans who
are at risk of going hungry all throughout the year – and many of
them are children. With changes in the economy, we tend to see the
need to step in and help out become greater, so we think this is an
easy way for those riding the Rail Runner to choose to help if they
wish.”
The food drive will be held from July 20-24.
Passengers are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to the
Rail Runner. There will be barrels located in the two southern
most rail cars, next to the engine on all train sets next week.
