Town of Bernalillo plans around
Rail Runner Stations
Residents asked to participate in planning efforts near Rail
Runner stations
(Bernalillo, 6-1-07) – When Governor Bill Richardson
dedicated the Sandoval County/U.S. 550 Rail Runner Station in
Bernalillo last July, he proudly announced that “the future of
transportation in NM has arrived.” Now, the residents of Bernalillo
have the opportunity to help shape what that future will look like
in the areas surrounding the Sandoval County Station and the
recently opened Downtown Bernalillo Station.
“The Rail Runner is now poised to fully integrate
commerce and community”, says Bernalillo Mayor Patricia A.
Chávez. “In addition to providing a much-needed transportation
alternative to our residents, the Rail Runner can also help
boost our local business economy, provide housing options, and
help us preserve Bernalillo’s rich history.”
“We’re looking closely at the areas within a
quarter-to-half-mile – basically, walking distance – from both
stations”, says Stephen Jerge, Bernalillo Town Manager. “It’s
very important that residents attend one of these public
workshops and participate in this effort, because the plans we
make today, are going to shape the future of Bernalillo for
generations to come.”
In an effort to embrace the unique development opportunities the
Rail Runner presents, the Town of Bernalillo last year passed a
moratorium on new development around each station. This reprieve
set the framework for this planning effort and allows elected
officials, staff, and the broader community to pause and explore
what types of development will best utilize the strengths the
Rail Runner brings to Bernalillo.
A multi-day workshop is also planned to bring together
residents, elected officials, planners, architects, landscape
designers, and others to create land use plans for the areas
surrounding the stations. The public is encouraged to take part
in this very important planning process aimed at examining how
mixed-use, pedestrian-friendly development around each station
can help enhance the existing character of historic Bernalillo.
