Downtown Bernalillo Rail Runner
Station to be formally Dedicated
(Bernalillo, 5-22-07) – Less than a month after bringing
the New Mexico Rail Runner Express into the heart of Downtown
Bernalillo, the town is planning to celebrate with a formal
dedication ceremony.
“This is a big day for the Town of Bernalillo”, says NM
Transportation Secretary Rhonda Faught. “It not only celebrates the
addition of a new way to travel for local residents, but it allows
passengers coming into Bernalillo to experience the rich culture and
heritage that this historical treasure offers.”
On April 27th, the new station became the 7th station to be added to
the 50-mile Phase One Rail Runner corridor between the Town of
Bernalillo to the north and the City of Belen to the south.
”The residents of Bernalillo have been very supportive of the Rail
Runner”, says Lawrence Rael, Executive Director of the Mid-Region
Council of Governments. “We believe this station will serve as a
strong link for the local economy and lead to the development of
more commercial opportunities in the area. Having a Rail Runner stop
right downtown gives Bernalillo a strong connection to the other
communities in the region”.
“Rail Runner service in Bernalillo gives us an opportunity to do two
important things”, says Bernalillo Mayor Patricia A. Chávez. “One,
it provides our residents with a much-needed affordable
transportation alternative, and two, it allows people who come to
Bernalillo to experience our downtown - which was once part of the
famous Route 66. It really lets us hold onto our history, while
celebrating our future”, adds Mayor Chávez.
The public is invited to a special Rail Runner station dedication
this Thursday, which will include a mariachi band, traditional
Folklórico Dancers, music, and light refreshments. There will be
representatives from the Governor’s office, as well as the New
Mexico Department of Transportation, Bernalillo Mayor Patricia A.
Chávez, and other dignitaries on hand to speak at the event.
