Rail Runner celebrates
300,000th Rider!
NM Rail Runner Express reaches 300,000
passengers in little more than half a year of service
(2-21-07) It’s only been on the track for just more than a
half a year, and already the New Mexico Rail Runner Express is
celebrating its 300,000th rider.
"The fact that we’ve reached this major landmark in commuter rail
service so quickly is a testament to the popularity and usefulness
of the Rail Runner!” said Lawrence Rael, Executive Director of the
Mid-Region Council of Governments. “We’re pleased that people
continue to enjoy New Mexico’s newest mode of transportation.
The Rail Runner, which has become the fastest start-up of a
commuter rail train in the country in the past 20 years, currently
carries commuters along a 50-mile corridor between the Town of
Bernalillo and the City of Belen.
“I think the response to the Rail Runner really shows that people
are ready to say good-bye to traffic jams and traffic stress, and
sit back and enjoy the ride,” says New Mexico Secretary of
Transportation, Rhonda Faught.
The lucky person to be designated the official 300,000th
passenger will be notified of their unique distinction at the
Downtown Albuquerque Rail Runner station this Thursday, February
22nd following the arrival of the 8:40am train. That rider will
receive a “goody bag” of Rail Runner items, including a scale model
of the Rail Runner Express, as well as a travel mug, and other Rail
Runner items.
